Week 3: Discovering the Love of Local Agriculture

Week 3 of student teaching is complete! This past week has been full of many great memories! Throughout my week of teaching, there were many moments of growth and opportunities to learn!

One highlight from my week was applying the knowledge of agriculture products to our classroom instruction. In my Intro to Ag class, we did a comparison taste test between homemade applesauce that was made from local Adam's Country apples to a store brand applesauce. The students identified their hypothesis of which applesauce would taste better based on their understanding of our local agriculture industry. We worked together through the simple process of making applesauce and agreed that the homemade applesauce was much tastier than the store-bought applesauce. What better way to build support for our local agriculture industry than to taste the better difference in class!

Another highlight from this week was challenging my Animal Care II class through inquiry-based learning through the use of our classroom lab notebooks. While focusing on livestock breeds in this unit, we have used a variety of methods to enhance the understanding of the various breeds while also engaging in meaningful activities!

Some of my goals to continue to work on this upcoming week include my teaching confidence and transitions between classes. I strive to continue to hold my classes to a high standard and to continue to meet our expectations for each other. With each new week, I am getting more comfortable with the students and environment, but I always want to be mindful of my role and continue to always make strides to improve.

When reflecting with my cooperating teacher, I also want to become more comfortable with changing rooms for my classes and to utilize all of the time as best as I can. With being my first week teaching this course, I know that there is plenty of time to improve, however, I want to adapt my methods from last week and make a few slight changes to be better for this upcoming week!

It is hard to believe that I have been part of the Gettysburg community for three weeks! I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the phenomenal students and working with the most supportive teachers! Thank you for following me on my agricultural education journey and please feel free to leave any comments or advice! Stay tuned to see all that next week has to bring!
